Bumex (Bumetanide) is a diuretic (water pill) used to treat fluid retention (edema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or a kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome. Bumex may also be used for purposes not listed above. Bumex is a diuretic (water pill) that causes a large increase in urine output (diuresis) by preventing the kidney from retaining fluid. Specifically, it blocks the reabsorption of sodium and fluid from the kidney’s tubules. Kidney tubules are responsible for regulation of water and electrolyte balance, so by directly affecting these, Bumex can increase water output and reduce the level of built-up fluids in the body.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Bumex also called Burinex from Canada by Knight Therapeutics Inc. The generic Bumetanide is available from the United Kingdom by a different manufacturer. Bumex is available in the strength of 5 mg tablets and the generic Bumetanide comes in the strength of 1 mg tablets.

The common side effects of Bumex include muscle cramps, dizziness, low blood pressure, nausea, or headaches. Contact your doctor if these side effects become severe or do not go away. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as:

• A seizure;
• Confusion;
• Easy bruising;
• Hearing problems;
• Hallucinations;
• Problems with thought or memory;
• Signs of dehydration (feeling very thirsty or hot, being unable to urinate, heavy sweating, etc);
• Signs of low magnesium;
• Signs of low potassium;
• Trouble speaking or understanding what is said to you;
• Twitching;
• Unusual bleeding;
• Unusual weakness;
• Weak or shallow breathing

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. If you notice any serious side effects or signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical attention.

You should not use Bumex if you are allergic to bumetanide, or if you have severe kidney disease or are unable to urinate, severe liver disease or cirrhosis, severe dehydration, or an electrolyte imbalance (such as low levels of potassium or magnesium in your blood). To make sure Bumex is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had a heart rhythm disorder, liver disease, kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), gout, an allergy to sulfa drugs, or if you are on a low salt diet. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding in order to discuss any possible risks. Avoid becoming dehydrated while using Bumex. Follow your doctor’s instructions about the type and amount of liquids you should drink while you are taking Bumex. Bumex is not approved for use in anyone under 18 years of age. Bumex can harm your kidneys, especially if you also use certain medications for infections, cancer, osteoporosis, organ transplant rejection, bowel disorders, or pain or arthritis. Tell your doctor about all your other medications, especially lithium, digoxin, probenecid, indomethacin, blood pressure medication, or any other diuretic. This is not a complete list of interactions. Tell your doctor about any medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of interactions.
