WHAT IS GLEEVEC? 

Gleevec (Imatinib) is a prescription drug that helps treat certain leukemia (blood cancer) such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia and chronic myelogenous leukemia. It is also helpful in the treatment of bone marrow disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome, digestive tract tumors, and skin cancer.  

CML GLEEVEC 

Imatinib belongs to a class of drugs called BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors, Antineoplastics, or PDGFR-alpha Inhibitors, which works by blocking the production of cancer cells (such as CML cells) and activation of certain enzymes.  

GLEEVEC PRECAUTIONS 

Before taking this medication, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to it, or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you have a family history or medical condition of:

GLEEVEC SIDE EFFECTS 

The common side effects of Gleevec are fluid retention, drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, muscle cramps, muscle or joint pain, skin rash, tiredness, headache, diarrhea, nausea/vomiting, and upset stomach. GLEEVEC DOSAGE

This medication comes in two dosage forms and strengths: 100 mg, and 400 mg tablets. 

A dosage of 600 mg once a day is recommended in the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia. 

For the treatment of myelodysplastic or myeloproliferative diseases, the recommended dose is 400 mg, taken orally once daily. 

For the treatment of chronic phase or accelerated phase, the recommended starting dose is 600 mg, taken orally once daily. This may be increased to 400 mg, taken every 12 hours, if the patient shows no sign of improvement from the drug.  

For the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors, the recommended starting dose is 400 mg, taken orally once daily. This may be increased to 400 mg, taken twice daily if the patient shows no sign of improvement from the drug. 

For the treatment of Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), Gleevec’s recommended starting dose is 400 mg, taken orally once daily. This dosage may be increased to 600 mg, depending on the patient’s tolerance and condition. 

Taking Gleevec on an empty stomach is not recommended, so make sure to administer this medication with a meal and follow with lots of fluids.
