It works by activating alpha-2 receptors in the central nervous system and reduces the concentration of epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin. Reducing the concentration of these neurotransmitters causes blood vessels to dilate (relax or widen) and, as a result, lowers blood pressure.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Methyldopa are drowsiness, weakness, and headache. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may experience. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, or tongue.
