Acuvail (Ketorolac Tromethamine) Product Information

Acuvail belongs to a group of medications known as  NSAID's, or a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.  This medication is used to treat pain and and inflammation after cataract surgery, and works by reducing the natural substances in your body that allow pain and swelling.

As we age, we notice that out eyesight gets worse and we could eventually need cataract treatment on one or both eyes. While this is a necessary treatment to restore vision, the aftermath can be painful. Post  surgery, the eyes will be swollen and sting , Acuvail can be used to relieve these symptoms.

How is this Medication Commonly Prescribed?

You will start with the treatment the day before you are going to undergo cataract treatment. It is expected that you will also use it for around 2 weeks afterwards. It may be tempting to continue using it if the symptoms have not quite gone but using it for too long can lead to side effects.

To use the drops, you need to create a space by the lower eyelid and let the drop fall into that. Keep the eye closed for around a minute to make sure the drop stays in. Make sure that the dropper stays clean as you don’t want to be putting germs into your eye as well as the medication.

Just one drop should be placed into the eye twice a day. After 2 weeks it will be time to stop. It is possible to use Acuvail even if you are using other ophthalmic treatments. The only condition is, that there should be a 5-minute gap between using different products. The drops should only be placed in the eye that has been operated on.

 Side Effects

Hopefully you will not experience any side effects, but if you do they can include:

  • Eye issues that you did not have before – usually this will be irritation – and if it was there before surgery, it could become worse.
  • The white of the eye can take on a red tint
  • Swelling
  • The eye becoming sensitive to light
  • Eyes running
  • A throbbing sensation

On rare occasions there can be blurred vision, and while this will be worrying, it should not last for long. Most side effects will start to fade as the eye heals, but don’t be afraid to speak to your health care provider if they do not.

Precautions

If you have used this medicine before and had a reaction to it, you should inform the doctor before you start to use it. Other conditions that will prevent you from using these drops are:

  • A condition that means you have excessive bleeding or a blood clotting problem
  • Arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Glaucoma
  • Dry eye syndrome or have undergone surgery for any other eye condition

There is not any evidence to show that it will be a problem if you are pregnant or breastfeeding,  nor is it clear that it is safe. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding speak to your doctor who will make the decision as to whether or not you can use it.
