Toprol (Metoprolol) is a prescription medication used to treat chest pain (angina). Angina is chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscles. This condition is usually not life-threatening, but it is a warning sign of the risk of a heart attack or stroke. Toprol is also used to treat heart failure and high blood pressure. Treating high blood pressure prevents complications like stroke, kidney problems, and heart attacks. The active ingredient in Toprol is Metoprolol. Metoprolol belongs to a class of drugs called beta blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.
