Flovent Diskus (Fluticasone) Medication Information

Uses

Flovent Diskus is an inhaled corticosteroid indicated for: 

  • Prophylactic maintenance therapy and treatment of asthma in patients 4 years old and older
  • Add on for asthma therapy for patients requiring oral corticosteroids

Dosage

The Flovent Diskus is available in a powder for inhalation containing fluticasone in several strengths:

  • 50 mcg
  • 100 mcg
  • 250 mcg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Flovent Diskus include:

  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Throat irritation
  • Sinusitis 
  • Rhinitis
  • Oral candidiasis
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Headache

Precautions

Candida albicans infection of the mouth and throat can occur. To reduce the risk of candida infections, advise patients to swish and spit with water, immediately after inhalation. 

Potential worsening of infections can occur, use with caution in patients with active infections. More serious or even fatal course of chickenpox or measles can occur in susceptible patients. 

Patients are at risk of developing impaired adrenal function when transferring from systemic corticosteroids. Taper patients slowly from systemic corticosteroids if transferring to Flovent Diskus. In susceptible individualism, hypercorticism and adrenal suppression may occur with regular and very high dosage. If such changes occur, discontinue Flovent slowly. 

Assess for a decrease in bone density. 

Interactions

Common medications that interact with Flovent Diskus are listed:

  • Ketoconazole
  • Ritonavir 
  • Clarithromycin
  • Itraconazole

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature (68-77ºF). Store in a dry place away from direct heat or sunlight.

Pharmacist Tips

  • Localized infections with Candida albicans occurred in the mouth and throat in some patients.
  • Rinsing the mouth with water without swallowing after inhalation is advised to help reduce the risk of thrush
  • Flovent Diskus is not a bronchodilator and is not intended for use as a rescue medicine for acute asthma exacerbations.
  • When transferring to Flovent from systemic corticosteroids, the corticosteroid should be taper off slowly

How is this taken?

Flovent Diskus should be administered by the orally inhaled route only in patients aged 4 years and older.

 

Can I use this medication if I am pregnant?

Flovent Diskus should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

 

How long does it take Flovent Diskus to start working?

Time to onset and degree of symptom relief vary for individual patients. It may take 1 to 2 weeks or longer after starting treatment to achieve the maximum benefit. 

 

When should I take my Flovent inhaler?

Flovent Diskus is a medication that needs to be taken every day. It is dosed twice a day, so inhalations should be as close to 12 hours apart as possible. 

 

How many puffs should I take?

You should take one puff twice a day, your doctor may titrate your dose based on symptoms, so follow their instructions on use. 

 

Why do you have to rinse your mouth after using Flovent?

Flovent can cause a fungal infection commonly called thrush, to avoid this, patients should rinse their mouth without swallowing after each inhalation.
