What is Synjardy? 

Synjardy (Empagliflozin/Metformin) is a prescription medication that helps with controlling blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It belongs to a class of drugs called antidiabetic combinations and is a combination of two medications, which are Empagliflozin and Metformin. The Empagliflozin in this medication helps the kidney to discard glucose from the bloodstream, while Metformin helps reduce the production of glucose in the liver.  

Synjardy Precautions 

Before taking Synjardy, contact a healthcare professional if you are allergic to the ingredients of this medication or have any other allergies. Inform your healthcare provider further if you or a member of your family has suffered or is suffering from the following medical conditions:

  • Dehydration

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness, as this medication causes you to experience drowsiness, dizziness, or blurry vision due to low or high blood sugar. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects. 

Limit alcohol use while taking this medication as it puts you at an increased risk of developing lactic acidosis, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), and high ketone level.  

Before undergoing surgery, make sure the doctor is aware that you are taking Synjardy. 

Before undergoing a dental procedure, make sure the dentist is aware that you are taking Synjardy. You are likely to stop using this medication before undergoing surgery or procedure.  

Geriatric patients may be more sensitive to the side effects of this medication, especially low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), dehydration, low blood pressure (hypotension), and kidney problems.  

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.  

The metformin in this medication affects the menstrual cycle by promoting ovulation in women, resulting in an increased risk of becoming pregnant. Consult your doctor for reliable forms of birth control, such as pills or condoms, while taking this medication. 

The metformin in this medication passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor for medical advice if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. 

Synjardy Side Effects 

The common side effects of Synjardy include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, runny/stuffy nose, sore throat, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), bladder infection, and weakness. Stop taking Synjardy, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

Synjardy Dosing

There is also an extended-release tablet as a Synjardy alternative, that comes in four dosage strengths, which are 5 mg / 500 mg, 5 mg/ 1000 mg, 12.5 mg / 500 mg, and 25 mg / 1000 mg.  

For improving blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the starting dosage must be based on the patient’s current medication regimen. The maximum dosage of this medication is 25mg/2000 mg per day.  

When taking medication, administer it twice daily with meals. When taking the extended-release tablet, administer it once daily with a meal in the morning.  

If you missed a dose of this medication, take the medication tablet as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Don’t take a double dose of Synjardy to make up for the missed dosage.  

If you experience fainting or trouble breathing, which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
