Usage

Cytoxan (Cyclophosphamide) is a chemotherapy medication used to treat several types of cancer. Cytoxan is also sued to treat a certain type of kidney disease called nephrotic syndrome in children after other treatments have not worked. Cyclophosphamide belongs to the class of medications called alkylating agents. It is a chemotherapy drug. When Cytoxan is used for the treatment of cancer, it works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in the body. When used to treat nephrotic syndrome it works by suppressing your body's immune system.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects of Cytoxan may include darkening of the skin or nails, diarrhea, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.

Contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Joint pain;
• Mouth sores;
• Pink or bloody urine;
• Unusual decrease in the amount of urine;
• Signs and symptoms of infection such as fever, weakness, and fatigue;
• Unusual fatigue or weakness

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Cytoxan if you are allergic to Cyclophosphamide or other chemotherapy drugs such as busulfan and chlorambucil. Before you start using this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history especially if you have:

• Difficulty urinating;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Surgery to remove your adrenal glands

Cyclophosphamide can make you more likely to get infections or may worsen any infections you currently have. Avoid contact with people who may have infections that may spread to others. Talk to your doctor before you get immunizations and avoid contact with people who have recently received live vaccines. There may be a drug interaction between Cyclophosphamide and other medications. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins, especially if you’re taking the following medications:
• Medication to treat infection;
• Medication to prevent transplant rejection; • Medication to treat autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis
