Canesten HC Cream 1%/1% (Clotrimazole/Hydrocortisone) is a combined prescription medication used to treat fungal skin infections, such as athlete's foot, jock itch, ringworm, fungal nappy rash, fungal sweat rash, and vaginal or penile thrush. The active substances in Canesten HC Cream are Clotrimazole and Hydrocortisone. Clotrimazole belongs to the group of medicines called imidazole. It works by destroying the fungi and some bacteria that cause skin infections and relieves the symptoms of inflammation.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Clotrimazole/Hydrocortisone Cream are itching, skin rash, pain or discomfort, peeling of the skin, blisters, and burning sensation.

Stop using Canesten HC Cream and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Application site becomes reddish and swollen with yellow fluid within;
• Depression;
• Easy skin bruising and bleeding;
• Mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat start swelling;
• Muscle pain or weakness, muscle cramps;
• Severe stomach pain, severe back pain, or a severe upset stomach or vomiting;
• Sudden weight gain with moon face

Warnings and Interactions

This medication is only for use on the skin, do not take it by mouth or get closer to your mouth. Only use it to treat the skin condition that must have been seen and examined by your doctor. Consult your doctor before using this medicine on open wounds, dry, chapped, irritated, or sunburned skin. You should wash your hands before and after applying Canesten HC Cream. Clean and dry the skin area to be treated. Apply a small amount of the cream evenly to the affected area twice a day for seven days only. Do not wash the treated area after immediately applying Canesten HC Cream also; avoid using other products on the treated area unless directed by your doctor. Use a thinner layer or lesser quantity of medicine to avoid pilling. Avoid getting this medication in your eyes or nose, or mouth. Applying an excessive amount may result in pilling. It would be best to see your doctor if the infection hasn't cleared up after seven days of regular use.

Before you start using Canesten HC Cream, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Acne vulgaris or rosacea;
• Perioral dermatitis;
• Skin lesions caused by tuberculosis;
• Untreated bacterial skin infections like impetigo;
• Viral skin infections such as chickenpox, shingles, cold sore, or genital herpes;
• Vaccination reactions

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. A topical agent like Hydrocortisone is not usually recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women. Wash off any cream you put on your breasts before feeding your baby if you're breastfeeding. Reach out to your dermatologist for the best care while breastfeeding. There may be a drug interaction between Canesten HC Cream and other drugs such as other corticosteroid creams, tacrolimus or sirolimus, amphotericin, or other antifungal medicines like nystatin.
