Prandin (Repaglinide) is a medication used together with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Prandin is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Repaglinide is an antidiabetic drug that belongs to the class of medications known as meglitinides. This medication lowers blood glucose by encouraging your pancreas to release more insulin into the bloodstream. It starts to work quickly, so it is particularly helpful in controlling blood sugar levels straight after a meal. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the brand Prandin from Turkey (Novonorm) and Canada (Gluconorm) by Novo Nordisk. The generic Repaglinide comes from Canada and the United Kingdom by different manufacturers. Prandin and Repaglinide are available in the dosages of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg tablets.

Common side effects of Prandin may include low blood sugar, nausea, diarrhea, headache, back pain, joint pain, or cold symptoms such as a stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat.

Contact your doctor immediately if you notice more serious side effects such as:
• Pale or yellowed skin, dark coloured urine, fever, confusion, or weakness;
• Signs of high blood sugar (frequent urination, increased thirst, blurred vision, headaches, fatigue);
• Signs of pancreatitis (severe pain in your upper stomach spreading to your back, nausea, and vomiting)

You may have low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) while taking this medication. Signs may include shakiness, anxiety, pale skin, sweating, hunger, pounding heart (palpitations), and dizziness. To quickly treat hypoglycemia, eat or drink a fast-acting source of sugar (fruit juice, hard candy, crackers, raisins, or non-diet soda). Your doctor may prescribe a glucagon injection kit in case you have severe hypoglycemia. Be sure your family or close friends know how to give you this injection in an emergency.

This is not a complete list of side effects. If you notice any other side effects not listed here, please contact your doctor or pharmacist.

You should not use Prandin if you are allergic to Repaglinide, or if you have:

• Severe liver disease;
• Diabetic ketoacidosis

To make sure Prandin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had liver disease, kidney disease, a severe infection, or if you also take metformin or other diabetes medications. Follow your doctors instructions about using Prandin if you are pregnant or you become pregnant. Controlling diabetes is very important during pregnancy, and having high blood sugar may cause complications in both the mother and the baby. You should not breastfeed while using this medication. Prandin is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old. Prandin is also not approved for use in patients over the age of 75 years old. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication. It lowers blood sugar, and may interfere with your diabetes treatment. Several medications may interact with Prandin, especially clopidogrel, cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, or NPH insulin (such as isophane insulin). This is not a complete list of interactions, and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements you are currently taking or have recently taken in order to reduce the risk of any possible interactions.
