Warnings and Interactions

Before taking this drug, tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to Ampicillin; penicillin; cephalosporin antibiotics such as cefaclor, cefotaxime, or other ingredients. Ampicillin (Principen) comes as a capsule and should be taken by mouth. It is usually taken three to four times a day, either half an hour before or two hours after meals. The length of your treatment depends on the type of infection you have. Take Ampicillin at around the exact times every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Ampicillin precisely as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor. It would be best to continue to take this medication until the full-prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, resulting in a relapse of the infection. Consult your doctor if this medication is not working for you.

Before you start using Principen, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease (including hepatitis B infection);
• Viral infections such as infective mononucleosis

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you plan to get pregnant, pregnant, or plan to breastfeed a baby. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. It is not known if the drug passes to breast milk. It is best to reach out to your doctor before breastfeeding your newborn. There may be a drug interaction between principen and other drugs such as aspirin, allopurinol, oral contraceptive pills, probenecid, rifampin, other antibiotics such as chloramphenicol and sulfonamides.
