Imitrex (Sumatriptan) is used for treating migraine headaches. Sumatriptan belongs to a class of drugs called selective serotonin receptor agonists. This medication works by narrowing blood vessels around the brain. It reduces substances in the body that triggers headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms. Imitrex will only treat a headache that has already begun; it will not prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks.
Manufacturer Information
The brand name Imigran comes from Turkey and is manufactured by GSK. The generic comes from Canada (manufactured by PharmaScience known as Pms-Sumatriptan) and UK. These tablets are available in the strength of 25mg, 50mg and 100mg. Imitrex is also available in the form of a Nasal Spray in the strengths of 5mg and 20mg doses. This medication is also available in the strength of 6mg/0.5ml injection vials.
Side effects include:
• Anxiety, confusion, dizziness, headache;
• Chest pain and tightness, trouble breathing;
• Muscle cramps and stiffness;
• Shivering and sweating;
• Trouble with sleeping, etc.
Do not use Imitrex if you are allergic to Sumatriptan or if you have any history of heart disease. You should not use Imitrex within 24 hours before or after using another migraine headache medicine. Before using Imitrex, tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, seizures, high blood pressure, a heart rhythm disorder, or other risk factors. Sumatriptan can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not breast-feed within 12 hours after using Imitrex. Imitrex should not be given to anyone under 18 or over 65 years of age.
