Dosage

The brand Lasix is available in the strength of 10 mg/ml/120 ml oral solution and 40 mg & 500 mg tablets. The generic Furosemide comes in the strength of 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg tablets.

Usage

Lasix (Furosemide) is a prescription medication that is used for the treatment of fluid retention and swelling in people with conditions such as congestive heart failure, liver disease or a kidney disorder or other medical conditions. It is also used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. Furosemide belongs to the class of medications called diuretics, commonly referred to as “water pill”. It helps your body get rid of extra water and salt by making you urinate more. Lasix is usually taken with or without food, usually once or twice daily.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common side effects may include blurred vision, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness or light-headedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position, increased sensitivity of skin to sunlight, loss of appetite and vomiting.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Burning pain or numbness, tingling;
• Easy bruising, unusual bleeding;
• Feeling light-headed, like you might faint;
• High blood sugar;
• Kidney problems;
• Loss of hearing, ringing in your ears;
• Painful or difficult urination;
• Signs of liver or pancreas problems;
• Signs of an electrolyte imbalance;
• Sudden weakness or ill feeling, fever, chills

This is not a complete list of side effects. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that bothers you while you are using this medication.

Warnings and Interactions

Do not use Lasix if you are allergic to Furosemide or if you are unable to urinate. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you have:
• A thyroid disorder;
• An electrolyte imbalance;
• Bladder obstruction or urination problems, enlarged prostate;
• Cirrhosis or other liver disease;
• Diabetes;
• Gout;
• High cholesterol or triglycerides;
• Lupus;
• Sulfa drug allergy

This medication may make you dizzy or cause blurred vision. You should not drive or do any activity that requires you to be alert. Limit alcoholic beverages. Severe sweating, diarrhea, or vomiting can increase your risk of dehydration. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Furosemide and other medications such as alfuzosin, aliskiren, allopurinol, cyclosporine, glyburide, digoxin, lithium, methotrexate, risperidone, etc. Inform your doctor that you are taking Lasix if you have an MRI or any type of scan using a radioactive dye that is injected into your veins. Both contrast dyes and Furosemide can harm your kidneys.

Not all possible drug interactions are listed here. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions regarding drug interactions that you may have. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
