Usage

Nitoman (Tetrabenazine) is used to decrease the uncontrollable movements (chorea) or tics caused by Tourette’s syndrome, Huntington's disease, tardive dyskinesia. Reducing uncontrollable movement will help you regain function to carry on your normal daily activities. Nitoman is one of a group of drugs called monoamine depleting agents. Nitoman is thought to interfere with storage of serotonin and dopamine, the brain chemicals that contribute to movement disorders such as dopamine which is associated with movement disorders. Take this medication by mouth with or without food.

Side Effects and Precautions

Stop using the medication and get medical care if you have an allergic reaction. Signs of an allergic reaction may include difficulty breathing, hives (rash on your body), swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat—If you experience any of these symptoms, please call 911 or seek emergency medical care at the nearest emergency room (ER).

The common Nitoman side effects may include signs and symptoms of Parkinsonism, such as drowsiness, fatigue, depression anxiety, nervousness, drooling, nausea, stomach pain, weight increased, increased appetite, and orthostatic hypotension.

Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Depression (suicidal thoughts or ideation, sleeping a lot more or a lot less than usual, changes in weight, problems concentration, lack of interest in things that was previously enjoyed, reduced sex drive);
• Parkinsonism (tremors, difficulty starting or controlling movement, body stiffness, decrease in facial expressions, difficulty keeping your balance, speech problems);
• Trouble swallowing (increased coughing may be the first sign that you are having trouble swallowing).

Warnings and Interactions

Do not take Nitoman if you:
• Are allergic to tetrabenazine;
• Are allergic to any of the inactive ingredients of this medications;
• Are taking or have recently taken Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor antidepressants (e.g. phenelzine sulphate, moclobemide);
• Are taking or have recently taken a medication used to treat high blood pressure called reserpine;
• Have liver problems;
• Have had depression, in the past or are currently being treated for depression

Before you use Nitoman, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:
• Are pregnant, or thinking about becoming pregnant, or are breastfeeding;
• Are taking reserpine or if you are taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, or plan to take a MAOI in the next 14 days;
• Drink alcohol regularly;
• Have liver problems;
• Have heart disease including irregular heart beat;
• Have Parkinson’s disease;

You should tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any medications (prescription, non-prescription and natural herbal) especially monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor; antidepressants such as fluoxetine; medicines that treat an irregular heartbeat such as quinidine; antipsychotics such as thioridazine; medicines for Parkinson’s disease such as levodopa. Nitoman may cause depression, thoughts of suicide or death or suicidal behavior in some patients. You and people close to you should watch for changes in your mood, or if you start to have thoughts about hurting yourself and report to your doctor immediately should they occur. Nitoman may cause drowsiness and low blood pressure. Driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous tasks should be avoided until you know how Nitoman affects you. Nitoman may increase the chance that you will have trouble swallowing.
