Description

Generic Name: estradiol

Drug Class: estrogen derivative

Indications

Climara is a transdermal prescription patch used to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms and symptoms of vulvar and vaginal atrophy secondary to menopause. It can also prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. This is also indicated to treat hypoestrogenism due to primary ovarian failure, hypogonadism, and castration.

Climara Dosage

This is available in Climara 25 mcg, 50 mcg, 75 mcg, and 100 mg transdermal systems.

Climara Mechanism of Action

This works as the principal intracellular estrogen and is known to be more potent than estrone and estriol. It then regulates the pituitary secretion of follicle-stimulating hormones, luteinizing hormones, and gonadotropins via a negative feedback mechanism. It can also reduce the elevated levels of hormones among postmenopausal women.

How to Use Climara Patch

Before using Climara, it is necessary to read the drug information or patient information leaflet, or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not use any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. For more medical advice or information, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

This patch is worn continuously and should be replaced every seven days. Make a schedule so you will not forget to remove and replace your patch. Do not increase/decrease your dosage or use the patch longer than intended.

Step-by-step Guide on how to use Climara Patch.

  1. Open the packaging by tearing it from the notch. Avoid using scissors.
  2. Remove the thick plastic adhesive-attached clear plastic film.
  3. Apply the transdermal patch to a clean and dry surface in your lower abdomen or buttocks. The patch should be placed in different areas every week. Do not put it near or in the breast area, and do not touch the sticky part of the patch.
  4. Press the patch firmly into the skin and rub the edges to ensure that it will stay in place.
  5. After 7 days, remove the patch by detaching it slowly from the area. If there are remaining residues, wait for around 15 mins before you gently rub the area with an oil-based lotion or cream.
  6. Dispose of the patch by folding the sticky side together. Then, throw it properly.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not use Climara Patch if you have a known allergy to estradiol or any inactive ingredients the tablet may contain. Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. Stop using this oral medication and seek emergency medical treatment right away if this happens.

Climara may be contraindicated for people with a history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cancer of the uterus, vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, blood clots, heart attack or any heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, blood clotting disorders, angioedema, diabetes, high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol and triglyceride, obesity, hypothyroidism, hypoparathyroidism, mineral imbalances, lupus, gallbladder disease, seizure, asthma, migraine, porphyria, uterus problems, any mental or mood disorders. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

Estradiol can possibly increase the risk of blood clots. Tell your healthcare provider if you will be in a certain position for a long period, such as going through surgery or going on a long-haul flight. You may have to discontinue Climara for a while under certain circumstances. Additionally, you should also avoid smoking or using tobacco, for they contain substances that can also increase the risk of blood clots.

This transdermal system can also make you more sensitive to sun exposure. It can cause dark, blotchy patches on the face, called melasma. While using this drug, limit your exposure to the sun. You should also avoid indoor tanning and always wear protective clothing when going out.

If you go through an MRI procedure, tell your physician or a radiologist that you have a patch on. This may contain metals that can cause serious burns during an MRI test. You may be asked to remove the patch before the procedure and apply a new patch after.

This type of medication should not be used during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. It is essential to discuss all the possible risks with a healthcare provider.
