What is Bystolic?

Bystolic, with the generic name nebivolol, is an oral medication indicated to manage high blood pressure among patients with hypertension. Through lowering blood pressure, it could help reduce the risk of nonfatal and fatal cardiovascular complications like stroke and heart attack.

This beta-adrenergic blocking drug works by inhibiting aldosterone and beta-1 antagonism, leading to decreased blood volume. It also inhibits the release of renin which results in reduced vasoconstriction. This medication is available in Bystolic 10 mg, 20 mg, 2.5 mg, and Bystolic 5 mg.

How to use Bystolic

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this beta-blocker. Never take this medication if you have not thoroughly understood all the information and instructions in the printed manual. If you need further medical advice on this treatment or have additional queries, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this drug orally. You may take it with or without a meal or as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet and take it with a glass of water. This medication is usually prescribed once a day and is best administered at nighttime.

Remember to take this medication regularly and with a dosing schedule to achieve full benefits. Follow all of your doctor’s recommendations exactly. Bystolic dose should not be changed because it is determined by your medical condition and reaction to treatment. Further, do not stop taking this medication abruptly, even when you feel better. This is to avoid worsening conditions or a rebound effect.

Precautions

Before taking this beta-blocker, make sure to disclose your full medical history to your physician. This includes any history of arrhythmia, breathing problems, blood circulation problems, liver disease, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, and mental disorders. Some medical conditions may impact how your body will respond to this drug. In addition, tell your doctor about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, herbal products, and supplements you are taking as they may have drug interactions with nebivolol.

Always look out for an allergic reaction when taking this beta-blocker. Do not take this oral medication if you have a known allergy to nebivolol or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. If you observe signs of hypersensitivity response, stop taking Bystolic and seek emergency management right away. These signs are skin rashes, swelling of the face and neck, hives, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing.
