Salazopyrin (Sulfasalazine) is a medication used to treat a certain types of bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. This medication helps decrease symptoms such as fever, stomach pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding. Salazopyrin EC tablets are used to treat adults and children with rheumatoid arthritis in patients who cannot tolerate other medications for rheumatoid arthritis. Sulfasalazine belongs to a class of drugs called anti-inflammatory drugs Sulfasalazine works locally in the colon to decrease inflammation. It also works throughout the body by inhibiting the formation of prostaglandins, which controls pain and inflammation.

We currently offer the brand Salazopyrin and Salazopyrin EC from Canada by Pfizer. The generic Sulfasalazine also comes from Canada by a different manufacturer.
Seek emergency medical help if you have any signs of an allergic reaction to this medication. The common side effects of Salazopyrin may include diarrhea, dizziness, feeling sick, headache, rashes, and stomach pain.

• Have a glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-P) deficiency
Drinking alcohol with this medication can cause side effects. Salazopyrin may cause hallucinations or make you dizzy and may impair your reactions. Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medication will affect you. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, nonprescription, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Salazopyrin and other medications. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Salazopyrin should not be used by anyone under the age of two years old.
