Ferriprox (Deferiprone) is a prescription medication used by people with thalassemia, a blood disorder in people who have too much iron in the body, caused by repeated blood transfusions. Deferiprone belongs to a class of drugs known as iron chelators. This medication works by attaching to iron and helps your body pass the extra iron out in the urine. Blood transfusions help people with blood disorders but they bring extra iron into the body. High levels of iron can cause health problems such as heart failure, liver disease, diabetes, and delayed growth in children. Ferriprox is usually used if you have trouble taking other iron-removal medications or you continue to have high iron levels after taking other iron-removal medications.

The common side effects of Ferriprox may include abnormal liver function tests, infections, joint pain, nausea, stomach pain, and vomiting.
Stop using Ferriprox and call your doctor right away if you have any signs of an infection such as:
• Fever, chills, or body aches;
• Flu symptoms;
• Skin sores;
• Sores in your mouth and throat
Do not use Ferriprox if you are allergic to Deferiprone. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctors about your medical history and if you have ever had a weak immune system or liver disease. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Deferiprone and other iron chelating medicines such as deferasirox or deferoxamine, antacid that contains aluminum, medicines or supplements that contain iron, and vitamins or mineral supplements that contain iron or zinc. Both men and women using this medication should use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy. Women may need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this medication and use effective birth control for at least six months after the last dose. You should not breastfeed while using this medication and for at least two weeks after your last dose. Ferriprox tablets are used in adults and children, eight years of age and older.
