Tiotropium belongs to the class of medications called bronchodilators. This medication is used once daily for the long-term relief of symptoms such as shortness of breath and wheezing associated with the lung disease known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It works by enlarging the airways to allow easier breathing. It comes as a capsule containing dry powder, which is inhaled through the mouth using the Handihaler device.

Spiriva handihaler consists of 30 Spiriva capsules in 18 mcg strength and a handihaler device. Tiotropium inhaler comes with 15 capsules in 18 mcg strength with the inhalation device. Less serious side effects of Tiotropium include:
• Constipation, upset stomach, vomiting;
• Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;

Serious side effects include:
• Blurred vision, eye pain or redness, seeing halos around lights;
• Pain or burning when you urinate;
• Rapid heart rate;
• Sores or white patches on your mouth, lips or tongue;

• Wheezing, chest pain or tightness, trouble breathing
A Spiriva capsule is for use only in the handihaler device. Do not take the capsule by mouth. Use only one capsule at a time. Spiriva is used to prevent bronchospasm attacks. Do not use this medication to treat a bronchospasm attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough to reverse your symptoms. Use a fast-acting inhalation medication to treat an attack. There may be an interaction between Tiotropium and other medications such as antihistamines, atropine, donepezil, ipratropium, potassium supplements, rivastigmine, tolterodine, etc. Speak to your doctor if you are taking any of these medications.
