Paxil (Paroxetine) Medication Information

Uses

Paxil is a selective serotonin receptor inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat major depressive disorder, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and other anxiety disorders. 

Dosage

The tablets are available in several different strengths:

  • 10 mg
  • 20 mg
  • 30 mg
  • 40 mg

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Paxil include:

  • Somnolence
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Decreased libido

Precautions

Paxil like other SSRIs can cause an increase in suicidality during the first initial treatment. It is important to monitor patients taking Paxil to ensure that they do not have any significant changes during the first month of therapy.

There was a small percentage of patients that have experienced seizures while taking Paroxetine.

It is recommended that treatment with Paxil be tapered off if it is decided that it is not longer needed. 

Paxil, like other SSRIs can cause a decrease in sodium in the body. The doctor should monitor your blood chemistry when you are taking Paxil.

There is an increased risk of bleeding while taking Paroxetine. 

Interactions

The most common drug interactions with Paxil are listed:

  • Tryptophan
  • Pimozide
  • SSRIs
  • SNRIs
  • MAOIs
  • Triptans
  • Warfarin
  • Cimetidine

Store at room temperature (59-86ºF).
