Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of infections of the urinary tract caused by bacteria such as bladder infections. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic which belongs to a group of medications called nitrofurans. This medication works by killing or stopping the growth of the bacteria and other organisms that cause these infections. Macrodantin should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are caused by bacteria. It will not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu. This medication should not be used in children less than one month of age due to the risk of hemolytic anemia.

The common side effects of Macrodantin may include headache, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Nitrofurantoin may cause urine to turn dark yellow or brown in color.
