Macrodantin (Nitrofurantoin) is a prescription medication used for the treatment of infections of the urinary tract caused by bacteria such as bladder infections. Nitrofurantoin is an antibiotic which belongs to a group of medications called nitrofurans. This medication works by killing or stopping the growth of the bacteria and other organisms that cause these infections. Macrodantin should only be used to treat or prevent infections that are caused by bacteria. It will not work for viral infections like the common cold or flu. This medication should not be used in children less than one month of age due to the risk of hemolytic anemia.

Our Canadian Pharmacy currently offers the generic Nitrofurantoin from Canada in the strength of 50 mg and 100 mg tablets and capsules. The brand Macrodantin is not available at this time.

The common side effects of Macrodantin may include headache, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. Nitrofurantoin may cause urine to turn dark yellow or brown in color.

Talk to your doctor right away if you have any of the following rare but serious side effects such as:

• Easy bruising or bleeding;
• Mental or mood changes;
• New signs of infection;
• Persistent or severe headaches;
• Vision changes

You should not take Macrodantin if you are allergic to Nitrofurantoin or if you have any other allergies. You should not use this medication during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. This medication passes into breast milk and may affect a nursing baby. Talk to your doctor before breast-feeding.
