What is Implanon?

Implanon (Etonogestrel) is a contraception implant used for the prevention of pregnancy. It is a small, thin, plastic rod that is implanted under the skin on the upper arm. The rod in place slowly releases etonogestrel into the body and will provide continuous contraception for 3 years. It belongs to a class of drugs called progestins, which works by thickening the mucus on the cervix to stop sperm cells from swimming through the egg cells.

Inform your healthcare provider at least 4 weeks beforehand if you will be undergoing surgery or required to be confined to a chair or bed for a long time. You may stop this medication for a time or may be required to take special precautions as it increases the risk of blood clots.

Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that requires focus and alertness as this medication causes you to experience dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid these activities until you are certain you can perform them safely. Avoid alcohol or cannabis (marijuana) intake to avoid worsening these side effects. Implanon increases the risk of acquiring melasma or dark patches on the face or skin. Limit your time under the sun and avoid direct sunlight to not worsen this effect. Always use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outside to protect your skin. This medication increases the risk of acquiring vision problems for people with nearsightedness, and may cause trouble for people who wear contact lenses. Consult an optometrist if these problems start to occur.

Implanon will not protect you from sexually-transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia, HIV, genital herpes, AIDS, and more. This medication is not recommended to be used by women during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant while taking this medication, inform your doctor immediately. Using this medication while pregnant increases the risk of suffering from ectopic pregnancy (the fertilized egg grows outside the uterus).

This medication passes into breast milk, so inform your health care provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.
