Description

Generic Name: ipratropium bromide and albuterol sulfate

Drug Class: anticholinergic and beta2-adrenergic agonist

Combivent Inhaler Indications

Combivent inhaler is a prescription aerosol used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) among patients who are on a regular aerosol bronchodilator but continue to have evidence of bronchospasm and require a second bronchodilator.

It prevents and treats symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing.

Combivent Inhaler Dosage Forms

This is available in Combivent 20/100 mcg inhalation aerosol.

Combivent Inhaler Mechanism of Action

This inhalation spray combines an anticholinergic and a beta-agonist. It works by impeding the vagally-mediated reflexes by inhibiting the actions of acetylcholine. This results in bronchodilation. Also, it increases the concentration of cyclic AMP, which results in the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the airway, from the trachea to the bronchioles.

How to Use Combivent Inhaler

Before you use this prescription product, you must read the patient information leaflet or brochure that comes with it. Do not use this oral inhaler unless you thoroughly understand all the information and instructions. Ask your doctor or the pharmacist for further information.

This is usually prescribed 2 inhalations, 4 times daily or not exceeding 12 inhalations in 24 hours. Make a dosing schedule so you will not miss your doses. Do not increase/decrease your Combivent Inhaler dosage or use this aerosol more frequently than prescribed.

Step-by-step guide on how to use Combivent Inhaler

  1. Properly insert the metal canister into the clear base of the mouthpiece.
  2. Remove the protective dust cap from the mouthpiece.
  3. Vigorously shake the canister for around 10 seconds and spray it away from you three times.
  4. Hold the inhalation device in an upright position, with the mouthpiece down.
  5. Exhale deeply through your mouth.
  6. Put the mouthpiece in your mouth with your lips sealed tightly around it. Close your eyes to ensure that the medication will not get into your eyes.
  7. Inhale slowly through the mouth as you press the canister firmly.
  8. Hold your breath for 10 seconds and exhale slowly.
  9. Wait for at least two seconds and shake the canister vigorously again for 10 seconds. Repeat steps 5-8.
