Description

Generic Name: dutasteride

Drug Class: 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor

Indications

Avodart is an oral prescription drug used to treat symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia among men with an enlarged prostate. It can improve BPH symptoms, such as difficulty initiating urine flow, weak stream, and frequent or urgent urination. It also helps reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for BPH-related surgery.

Dosage Forms

This is available in Avodart 0.5 mg capsule.

Avodart Mechanism of Action

It hampers the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. This is a form of androgen that is responsible for the development and enlargement of the prostate gland. By inhibiting this conversion, enlarged prostate can be reversed.

How to take Avodart

Before starting to take Avodart, it is necessary to read the drug information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. Unless you understand the uses and directions of a medication, you should not take it. Consult a physician or pharmacist if you require additional medical advice or information.

You can only take this capsule by mouth. It is usually prescribed once daily, preferably at the same time each day. You may take it with or without a meal. Swallow the capsule entirely and drink a full glass of water right after. Cutting, crushing, or chewing this product is not recommended. You must also be careful when handling this drug, as it can be absorbed through the skin.

Plan your dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently than advised.

Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of high-grade prostate cancer and liver problems. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.
