What is Famvir?

Famvir (generic name: famciclovir) is an oral medication indicated to treat recurrent episodes of herpes labialis (cold sores) and genital herpes. It is also used to manage herpes zoster (shingles). Additionally, it is prescribed to treat recurrent episodes of orolabial or genital herpes among HIV-infected adult patients.

This is available in Famvir 500 mg, 250 mg, and 125 mg tablet forms.

How does Famvir work?

This nucleoside analog DNA polymerase inhibitor works by inhibiting herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) DNA polymerase competitively with deoxyguanosine triphosphate. Thus, herpes viral DNA synthesis and replication are also inhibited.

How to use Famvir

To initiate, read the medication guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not take this type of medication if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and precautions printed in the guide. If you have further inquiries on how Famvir works or need more medical advice, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed twice or thrice daily or as directed by your physician. This could be taken with or without a meal. Swallow the tablet and drink a glass of water after that.

Remember to take this oral medication regularly and exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your dose. Each dose should have equal intervals because it is best when the amount of drug in the body is maintained at a constant level. Do not alter your Famvir dosage as it is based on your medical condition, age, and response to treatment. Also, do not stop taking this drug abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Famvir

Before you start to use this oral drug, you must fully disclose your medical history to your physician. This includes any history of kidney problems, mood disorders, mental illnesses, and liver disease. Some diseases and disorders may greatly affect how your body will respond to Famvir. Further, you should discuss the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of the possible drug interactions with this antiviral agent.

Always be watchful for an allergic reaction while taking Famvir. Never take this drug if you have a known allergy to famciclovir, penciclovir, lactose, or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. Signs of hypersensitivity are skin rashes, hives or itchiness, severe dizziness, swelling of the face and neck, and breathing trouble. If this occurs, immediately discontinue medication and seek emergency medical help.

Among the adverse effects of this drug are drowsiness and dizziness. This could be triggered or aggravated by alcohol. As much as possible, limit the consumption of alcoholic beverages. You should also practice safety precautions when doing activities that require alertness, such as operating machinery and driving.

Note that this type of medication is used to manage genital herpes. However, Famvir is not meant to protect against the spread of the virus. To lower the chance of transmission, avoid sexual contact during an outbreak or if you are experiencing symptoms. You should also use an effective barrier method during all sexual activities.

Pregnant and breastfeeding moms must take this oral antiviral only if extremely needed. This is because it is still unknown whether this medication could cause harm to unborn babies and breastfed infants.
