Surmontil Information

Surmontil (Trimipramine) belongs to a group of medicines called antidepressants and can be used to treat depression (low mood) in adults. Surmontil is also used to treat depression in people who also have the symptoms such as problems sleeping, anxiety or are feeling irritable and restless (agitation). Trimipramine belongs to the class of medications called tricyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing the amount of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed to maintain mental balance.

Surmontil Side Effects

The most common side effect of Surmontil may include feeling drowsy or sleepy; constipation; dry mouth; tremor (shaking); blurred vision; rapid heartbeat; sweating more than usual; feeling dizzy on standing or sitting up quickly; sexual problems; problems passing urine; skin rash. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• An uneven or fast heartbeat;
• Blood disorders (low white blood cell numbers);
• Feeling unable to trust people or things, for no reason (paranoia);
• Fits (seizures);
• High blood sugar levels;
• Liver problems such as jaundice;
• Numbness or weakness in the arms and legs;
• Overactive behaviour or thoughts;
• Painful erection of the penis, unrelated to sexual activity;
• Severe vomiting or constipation

Surmontil Precautions

Do not use Surmontil tablets if you are allergic to trimipramine or to any other ingredients in this medication. Before you start taking this medication, tell your doctor about your medical history especially if you have heart problems; severe liver problems; mania; are pregnant; are breast feeding; are elderly; have an enlarged prostate gland; have glaucoma; have a history of epilepsy; have thyroid problems. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal supplements and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Surmontil and other medications such as sleeping pills, medicines to treat high blood pressure. If you have thoughts of harming or killing yourself at any time, contact your doctor or go to a hospital straight away. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking trimipramine as trimipramine can change the way alcohol affects you. Do not drive or use any tools or machines as trimipramine may make you feel sleepy or less alert. If you have intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before taking this medicinal product. Do not give trimipramine to children.
