Uses

Aricept is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of dementia of the Alzheimer’s type. Efficacy has been demonstrated in patients with mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s Disease.

There are oral tablets available in several different strengths:

Precautions

Cholinesterase inhibitors may have vagotonic effects on the sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodes manifesting as bradycardia or heart block.

Patients should be monitored closely for symptoms of active or occult gastrointestinal (GI) blee ding, especially those at increased risk for developing ulcers.

Cholinomimetics are believed to have some potential to cause generalized convulsions.

Cholinesterase inhibitors should be prescribed with care to patients with a history of asthma or obstructive pulmonary disease.

Can I take this with food?

It can be taken with or without food. 

 

Can I take this if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

There are no adequate or well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Aricept should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

It is not known whether donepezil is excreted in human milk. Caution should be exercised when Aricept is administered to a nursing woman.
