Usage

Glyset (Miglitol) is a prescription medication used with recommended diets and exercise programs to control high blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The active ingredient in Glyset is Miglitol. Miglitol belongs to the class of medication called Antidiabetics, Alpha-Glucosidase Inhibitors. It works by slowing down the breakdown and absorption of carbohydrates from the intestine into the blood. As a result, there is a reduction in blood sugar after a meal. Controlling high blood sugar helps prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, limb amputation, erectile dysfunction, and other problems associated with diabetes mellitus.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Glyset are nausea, vomiting, flatulence, abdominal pain, skin rash, and diarrhea.

Stop using Glyset and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• Blurred vision;
• Extreme thirst;
• Frequent urination;
• Symptoms of extremely low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) include confusion, sweating, and shakiness

Warnings and Interactions

Before taking Miglitol, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it, currently on antidiabetic medications, or have any other allergies. Glyset comes as a tablet and should be taken orally with a cup of water, usually 3 times daily. It should be taken after each meal. Follow your doctor's prescription carefully. You may experience blurred vision, dizziness, or drowsiness due to extremely low or high blood sugar. Do not drive, use machinery, or do any activity requiring alertness or clear vision until you can safely perform such activities. Limit alcoholic beverages while taking this medication because it can increase your risk of developing low blood sugar. To prevent a sudden drop in blood sugar, it would be best to eat meals on a regular schedule and not skip meals. Monitor your blood sugar regularly and inform your doctor if there is no progressive drop in your blood sugar. Treating diabetes is a lifetime treatment; hence, do not stop using your antidiabetic at any point.

Before you start using Glyset, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• diabetic ketoacidosis;
• Eye problems such as cataracts, glaucoma;
• Hypertensive or other heart diseases such as heart failure;
• Kidney problems;
• Liver problems;
• Serious intestinal problems such as ulcers and inflammatory bowel diseases

Tell your doctor about all your medications, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when needed. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits of treating diabetes in pregnancy. Pregnancy may cause or worsen diabetes. Discuss a plan with your doctor for managing your blood sugar while pregnant. Your doctor may change your diabetes treatment during pregnancy (such as diet and medications, including insulin). Miglitol passes into breast milk in small amounts but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breast-feeding. There may be a drug interaction between Glyset and other drugs such as eye drops (timolol), pramlintide, and beta blockers such as metoprolol and propranolol. Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture.
