Famvir (Famciclovir) is an antiviral drug that is used to treat infections caused by certain types of herpes viruses including genital herpes, cold sores and shingles. This medication works by slowing down the growth and spread of the herpes virus so the body can fight off the infection. Famciclovir does not cure these infections. It decreases the severity and length of these outbreaks and helps the sores heal faster and keeps the new sores from forming and decreases pain/itching. It may also help to reduce the length of time the pain remains after the sores are healed. Famvir works best when started at the first sign of an outbreak.

We currently have the brand from Canada and Turkey manufactured by Novartis. The generic Famciclovir comes from Canada and is manufactured by Pharma Science or Sandoz. It may come from other suppliers around the world. Famvir is available in the strength of 125mg, 250mg and 500mg tablets.

The efficacy of FAMVIR has not been established for the treatment of an initial outbreak of genital herpes infection. The safety and efficacy of FAMVIR for suppressive therapy beyond 1 year of treatment have not been established. Even with antiviral treatment, it is possible to spread the herpes virus. There is no cure for genital herpes. Famvir is supplied as film-coated tablets as follows: 125 mg in bottles of 30; 250 mg in bottles of 30; and 500 mg in bottles of 30.

The common side effects may include constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, fever, nausea, sweating, unusual weakness and vomiting. The serious side effects may include:
• Abdominal pain;
• Change in the amount of urine;
• Confusion;
• Dizziness or drowsiness;
• Easy bruising/bleeding;
• Hallucinations;
• Yellowing eyes/skin

You should not take Famvir if you are allergic to Famciclovir or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about all the medications you are currently taking including OTC and herbal medications. This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by the doctor and for the full prescribed length of time. Herpes infections are contagious and you can infect other people, even during your treatment with Famvir. Do not let the infected areas come into contact with other people. This medication will not prevent the spread of genital herpes. Avoid sexual intercourse or use a latex condom to prevent the spread of the virus to others. There may be an interaction between Famciclovir and other medications such as probenecid, raloxifene and zoster vaccine. This medication should not be used during pregnancy unless it is clearly needed. It is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk. Women should consider an alternative to breastfeeding if Famciclovir is taken.
