What is Femring?

Femring (Estradiol Acetate) is a prescription vaginal ring that helps with the treatment of vaginal menopause symptoms. It belongs to a class of drug called estrogens, which works by replacing the estrogen hormones that the body will lose during menopause to relieve symptoms, such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness.

Inform your healthcare provider if you had or will be undergoing surgery, or if you will be laying down in bed for a long time. These situations heighten the risk of developing blood clots. You may be advised to stop the medication for a while or to take special precautions to avoid developing blood clots.

Melasma or dark patches on the face or skin is one of the possible side effects of this medication. Limit your time outdoors, avoid direct sunlight, always use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when going outside to prevent this side effect from worsening.

Vision problems may develop for people with nearsightedness, while trouble may occur for patients wearing contact lenses.

This medication is not recommended to be used while pregnant. Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

This medication passes into breast milk and may reduce its quality and amount, so inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Femring Side Effects

The common side effects of Femring include nausea, vomiting, bloating, stomach cramps, weight changes, breast pain or tenderness, swelling in the hands or feet, thinning scalp hair, vaginal itching or discharge, menstrual period changes, and headache.

Stop using Femring, report side effects, and seek medical attention if you start experiencing:

  • Mood or Mental Changes
  • Breast Lumps
  • Dark Urine
  • Unusual Vaginal Bleeding
  • Vaginal Irritation or Itching
  • Vaginal Odor or Discharge
  • Severe Abdominal Pain
  • Persistent Nausea or Vomiting
  • Yellowing Eyes or Skin (Jaundice)
  • Swelling in Hands, Ankles, or Feet
  • Increased Thirst
  • Increased Urination
  • Allergic Reaction (Hives, Rash, Swelling)

Serious problems such as stroke, heart attack, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism may develop due to blood clots. Seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing chest, jaw, or left arm pain, unusual sweating, weakness on one side of the body, pain, swelling, or redness of the legs, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the arms or legs, sudden or severe headache, confusion, trouble speaking, sudden vision changes, trouble breathing, coughing up blood, and sudden dizziness or fainting.

Although rare, vaginal rings such as this medication have caused a serious bacterial infection called toxic shock syndrome or TSS. Remove the vaginal ring and seek medical attention immediately if you start experiencing diarrhea, rash, muscle pain, sudden dizziness or fainting, and high fever.

Femring and weight gain have been linked with each other as patients claimed they have gained weight since they started using this medication. The weight gains that the patient may have been experiencing could have been caused by menopause and not the vaginal ring.

This is not the complete list of the adverse reactions of Femring. Call your doctor for medical advice about the side effects you may experience from this medication.

Femring Dosage

Follow your healthcare provider’s directions concerning the prescribed dose for your medical condition. Read the medication guide and prescription labels for the drug information and directions in taking this medication.

Femring comes in one dosage form, which is a vaginal ring and comes in two dosage strengths, which are Femring (0.05 mg per 24 hours for 3 months) 12.4 mg per ring, and Femring (0.1 mg per 24 hours for 3 months) 24.8 mg per ring.

For the Femring HRT, make sure to wash your hands before and after inserting the vaginal ring. The ring must be left in place for 90 days before removing it. Your healthcare provider may advise you to replace it with a new ring.

The ring does not need to be removed during sexual intercourse but may be removed if bothersome. Rinse it with warm water before reinserting it after intercourse.

You can remove the vaginal ring by looping a finger around it and pulling it out from the vagina. If you are having trouble removing it, call your doctor.

You will be monitored by your healthcare provider on a regular basis to assess if you should continue the treatment. You may be advised to self-examine your breasts for lumps monthly and have a mammogram once a year while using Femring.

If the vaginal ring is not yet in use, keep it in its protective pouch and store it at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
