Product Details

Rilutek (Riluzole) is a prescription medication that is used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Riluzole belongs to the class of medications called antiglutamates. It works by blocking the release of the compound called glutamate, which is believed to injure nerve cells. Riluzole is thought to work by protecting the nerves in the brain and spinal cord from too much of a natural substance. This medication is not a cure for ALS, but it may delay progression of the disease and prolong your life. Rilutek should be taken once every 12 hours.

The common side effects may include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, mild nausea, muscle stiffness, numbness or tingly feeling, runny nose and weakness. The serious side effects may include:
• Chest discomfort, dry cough, trouble breathing;
• Cough with yellow or green mucus; • Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine;
• Stabbing chest pain

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to riluzole or if you have any other allergies. Before you start taking this medication, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications take including OTC and herbal medications. Riluzole may impair your judgement. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. You should take Riluzole on an empty stomach. Avoid drinking alcohol. Caffeine may cause too much Riluzole to build up in your body. Smoking cigarettes may make Riluzole less effective. It is unknown whether Riluzole will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is unknown whether Riluzole passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. There may be a drug interaction between Riluzole and other medications such as allopurinol, amitriptyline, caffeine, omeprazole, rifampin and ciprofloxacin, etc.

The generic alternative is not manufactured by the company that makes the brand product.
