What is Diabeta?

Diabeta (generic name: glyburide) is an oral medication indicated to manage high sugar levels among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This drug is effective in improving glycemic control if taken with proper diet and exercise. It helps prevent complications of diabetes, including stroke, heart attack, blindness, nerve problems, kidney damage, and sexual dysfunction. However, this is not indicated for diabetic ketoacidosis or type 1 diabetic Mellitus.

This sulfonylurea generally works by stimulating the release of beta-cell insulin from the pancreas. It also decreases the rate of hepatic glucose production and increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors. In addition, Diabeta can produce a mild diuretic effect by enhancing renal free water clearance.

This is available in Diabeta 5 mg, and 2.5 mg tablet forms.

How to use Diabeta

To begin, read the medication information sheet included with this medicine. Do not take this oral antidiabetic if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and precautions in the guide provided. If you have some inquiries on how to take this drug or need further advice on your medical condition, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take the tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily or as directed by your physician. It is best to take this prescription drug with breakfast or your first meal of the day. Swallow the tablet and drink a glass of water right after.

Remember to take this drug regularly and exactly as prescribed. To avoid skipping a dosage, create a dosing schedule. If you have prescribed colesevelam, take Diabeta at least 4 hours prior to colesevelam because these drugs may interact.

Do not take this oral drug in higher dosage or more frequently than prescribed, as it could increase the risk of side effects. You should also keep taking Diabeta and do not stop using it abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Diabeta

Before you begin to take this oral antidiabetic, you should disclose your entire medical history to your physician. This includes any history of thyroid disease, hormonal conditions, liver disease, kidney disease, hyponatremia, or autonomic neuropathy. Certain diseases or conditions may affect how your body will respond to this type of medication. Also, you should talk about all the prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, supplements, and herbal products you are taking because of the possible drug interactions with this sulfonylurea.

Continually lookout for an allergic reaction while on this Diabeta medication. Do not take this prescription drug if you have a known allergy to glyburide or any inactive ingredients each tablet may contain. You should discontinue the medication and immediately alert your local emergency line once you experience signs of hypersensitivity, such as breathing trouble, severe dizziness, swelling of the face and neck, skin rashes, and hives.

Alcohol and glyburide may interact and cause a disulfiram-like reaction characterized by dizziness, facial flushing, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. Alcohol consumption could also worsen adverse effects like dizziness. With this, you should avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking this drug.

This oral medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. You should limit your sun exposure and avoid indoor tanning. You must also apply sunblock cream and wear protective clothing when going outdoors.

Pregnancy can worsen or cause diabetes. If you are pregnant, you should consult your healthcare provider right away, as this condition may warrant an increase in dosage or changes in your treatment plan.
