Usage

Prolixin (Fluphenazine) is a prescription medication used to treat schizophrenia and psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. The active substance in Prolixin is Fluphenazine. Fluphenazine belongs to the class of medication called Antipsychotics, 1st Generation (Phenothiazines). It works by affecting the balance of natural chemicals (dopamine) in the brain. It blocks postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic D1 and D2 receptors in the brain; depresses the release of hypothalamic and hypophyseal hormones and is believed to depress the reticular activating system thus affecting basal metabolism, body temperature, wakefulness, vasomotor tone, and emesis.

The common side effects of Prolixin are confusion, nausea, vomiting, weight gain, erectile dysfunction oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea.
