Exjade Information

Exjade Details (Brand and Generic)

CanadaPharmacyOnline.com currently offers the brand Exjade from Canada and Turkey manufactured by Novartis. The generic Deferasirox is also available from Canada by a different manufacturer.

Dosage

The brand Exjade and its generic Deferasirox are available in the strength of 250 mg and 500 mg dispersible tablets. The brand Exjade is also available in the strength of 125 mg dispersible tablet.

Usage

Exjade (Deferasirox) is a prescription medication used to treat the iron overload that occurs when anaemia is treated with frequent blood transfusions and in a patient with β-thalassemia. The active ingredient in Exjade is Deferasirox. Deferasirox belongs to the class of medicine called Iron-chelators. It works by binding to excess iron in the blood and removing it from the body (mainly through the stools/faeces), relieving the iron overload caused by blood transfusions. It is essential to remove this extra iron to keep your iron at a safe, healthy level.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Exjade are headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, constipation, indigestion, pain in the abdomen, skin rash, and itching.

Stop using Exjade and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• A combination of drowsiness, upper-right abdominal pain, yellowing or increased yellowing of your skin or eyes and dark urine (signs of liver problems);
• Frequent heartburn;
• Incessant abdominal pain, particularly after eating or taking Exjade;
• If you experience difficulty thinking, remembering information or solving problems, being less alert or aware or feeling very sleepy with low energy (potential signs of a high level of ammonia in your blood, which may be associated with liver or renal problems and lead to a change in your brain function);
• Marked decrease in the amount of urine your body produces;
• Rash, red skin, blistering of lips, eyes or mouth, skin peeling, high fever, flu-like symptoms, enlarged lymph nodes (signs of severe skin reactions);
• Severe rash or difficulty breathing and dizziness, or swelling mainly of the face and throat (signs of severe allergic reaction);
• Severe upper stomach pain;
• Vomiting blood or have black stools;
• Visual problems such as blurry of vision

Warnings and Interactions

You should not take Exjade if you are allergic to Deferasirox or any other ingredients of this medicine. You should not use this medicine if you are currently taking any other iron chelator medicines. Your doctor may decide to change your dose based on your serum ferritin level, other laboratory tests, or how often you get transfusions. It would be best if you took Exjade precisely the way your doctor prescribed. Do not chew or crush the Exjade dispersible tablet, and do not swallow it whole. Place the tablet into a glass of water and allow the tablet to disperse in the liquid. Drink this mixture right away.

Before you start using Exjade, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• Anemia (low red blood cells);
• A bone marrow disorder;
• A stomach ulcer;
• Advanced stage of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS; decreased production of blood cells by the bone marrow) or have advanced cancer;
• A weak immune system caused by disease (such as cancer, HIV, or AIDS), or by receiving steroids, chemotherapy, or radiation;
• Kidney disease;
• Low levels of platelets in your blood;
• Severe liver disease;
• Stomach or intestinal bleeding;
• Vision or hearing problems

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, think you may be pregnant, or plan to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine. Exjade is not recommended during pregnancy unless it is necessary. Suppose you are currently using an oral contraceptive or using a patch contraceptive to prevent pregnancy. In that case, you should speak with your doctor as this medication may reduce the effectiveness of oral and patch contraceptives. Breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with Exjade.

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. There may be a drug interaction between Exjade and other drugs such as antacids containing aluminium, ciclosporin (such as rheumatoid arthritis or atopic dermatitis), simvastatin (used to lower cholesterol), certain painkillers or anti-inflammatory medicines (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen, corticosteroids), oral bisphosphonates, anticoagulant, hormonal contraceptive agents, bepridil, ergotamine, repaglinide (anti-diabetes), rifampicin, anti-epilepsy such as phenytoin, phenobarbital, carbamazepine, HIV medications such as ritonavir, paclitaxel, theophylline, clozapine.
