Mexitil (Mexiletine) is used to treat certain types of serious irregular heartbeat (such as persistent ventricular tachycardia). It is used to restore normal heart rhythm and maintain a regular, steady heartbeat. Mexiletine is known as an anti-arrhythmic drug. It works by blocking certain electrical signals in the heart that can cause an irregular heartbeat. Treating an irregular heartbeat can decrease the risk for blood clots, and this effect can reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke. Take this medication by mouth with a full glass of water and food or an antacid. Taking this medication with food or an antacid helps to decrease certain side effects (nausea, heartburn). Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which antacids to use with this medication.

Manufacturer Information

Canadian Pharmacy King currently offers the generic Mexitil (Mexiletine) from Canada. Mexitil Capsules are available in the strength of 100 mg and 200 mg. The brand version is currently unavailable.

Common side effects of Mexitil may include heartburn, upset stomach, nausea, vomiting; dizziness, feeling lightheaded; tremors, feeling nervous; problems with coordination; or blurred vision. Call your doctor immediately if you notice less common but more serious side effects such as:

• A new or a worsening irregular heartbeat pattern;
• Chest pain;
• Liver problems--nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, tired feeling, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)

This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Contact your doctor if any of these side effects worsen or persist.

You should not use Mexitil if you have a serious heart condition such as "AV block". Mexitil may cause you to have abnormal liver function tests, especially if you also have congestive heart failure, or blood circulation problems. You should not use Mexitil if you are allergic to it, or if you have a serious heart condition such as "AV block". To make sure Mexitil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have liver disease; congestive heart failure; epilepsy or other seizure disorder; a weak immune system (caused by disease or by using certain medicine); or if you have recently taken other heart rhythm medicines (disopyramide, lidocaine, quinidine, or others). It is not known whether Mexitil will harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while using Mexitil. Mexiletine can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine. Other drugs may interact with mexiletine, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Tell each of your health care providers about all medicines you use now and any medicine you start or stop using.
