Onglyza (Saxagliptin) Medication Information

Uses

Onglyza is a prescription medication for type 2 diabetes that contains the active ingredient saxagliptin.

Onglyza is prescribed, along with a healthy diet and exercise, to improve blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that normally helps sugar get into your cells. But, if your body doesn’t recognize insulin properly, too much sugar stays in your blood.  Over time, high blood sugar levels can lead to many other health problems and increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke.

The good news is you can take control of your diabetes by eating healthy foods, exercising, and taking your medications as prescribed.

Dosage

Onglyza (saxagliptin) is an oral tablet that comes as 2.5 milligrams (mg) and 5 mg.

Take Onglyza once daily, around the same time each day.  You can take with or without food.

Your doctor will decide the dosage that is best for you.

Precautions

Onglyza may not be safe for people with the following medical history or conditions:

  • Pancreatitis or other pancreas problems
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney problems
  • Pregnant or plan to become pregnant
  • Breastfeeding
  • Type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis
  • History of an allergic reaction to saxagliptin (Onglyza)

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Peripheral edema (swelling in your feet, ankles, or hands)

Serious side effects can rarely occur with Onglyza.  These side effects require emergency medical care and may include:

  • Heart failure (heart does not pump blood very well)
  • Allergic reaction

Your doctor will prescribe Onglyza if the benefits for your health outweigh your risk of severe side effects.  For more information about the side effects of Onglyza, talk with your doctor or pharmacist.

Onglyza FAQs

How does Onglyza work in the body?

Onglyza enhances the body’s natural ability to maintain healthy blood sugar levels.  Saxagliptin helps the body increase the effects of insulin after meals.  It also reduces the amount of sugar released overnight by the liver, resulting in lower blood sugar and A1C.

What is A1C, and how does Onglyza affect it?

Your doctor will check your A1C using a simple blood test.  This test indicates your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months.  In clinical trials, Onglyza helped to lower A1C when combined with exercise and a healthy diet.  The lower your A1C, the lower your risk for developing complications of diabetes, such as heart attack or stroke.
