Exelon Patch Uses

Exelon Patch, also known as rivastigmine, is a transdermal patch used to treat mild, moderate, and severe Alzheimer’s dementia. It is also indicated for mild to moderate dementia associated with Parkinson’s disease. Exelon is not a cure for dementia but could improve awareness, memory, and ability to perform everyday tasks.

This is available in Exelon Patch 13.3 mg/24 hours, 9.5 mg/24 hours, and 4.6 mg/24 hours.

Mechanism of Action

This cholinesterase inhibitor is thought to work by enhancing cholinergic function. It increases the concentration of acetylcholine through the reversible hampering of its hydrolysis by cholinesterase. Exelon is specific for brain acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase, but not those located in peripheral tissues.

How to use Exelon Patch

To initiate, read the medication guide and information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use this type of medication without fully understanding the drug information, especially the instructions written in the guide. If you need more medical advice regarding your condition or have inquiries on how to use this patch properly, you can ask your doctor or pharmacist.

This patch is applied to the skin once daily. Remember to use this drug exactly as directed. Make a dosing schedule to make sure that you can apply a new patch on time. Do not alter your Exelon Patch dose as it is based on your body weight, medical condition, and response to treatment. Keep using this transdermal drug for as long as prescribed.

Step by step guide in using Exelon Patch:

  1. Open the pouch only if you are about to use the patch. Once opened, remove the protective liner. Do not cut or divide the transdermal patch.
  2. On a clean, dry, and hairless area on your back, upper arm, or chest, apply this patch. If you have an old patch attached, remove it before applying the new one. Wearing two patches at the same time is not permitted.
  3. When changing and removing your patch, fold it in half with the sticky side together. Throw it accordingly. When applying a new patch, you must choose a different area to prevent skin irritation.
  4. Wash your hands immediately after handling the patch.
