What is Apresoline used for?

Many people find that as they get older, their arteries and blood vessels become thinner and it is hard for blood to flow the way that it should. High blood pressure, otherwise known as hypertension, can occur and while this is dangerous, it can be dealt with.

Apresoline is classed as a vasodilator so it helps the muscles located in the blood vessels to relax. When this happens, they become wider, the blood flows more freely and blood pressure will drop to a safer level.

Dosage

You should read the leaflet that comes with the tablet and also follow what your doctor tells you. There is a reason why there is a limit to what can be taken because even when taking it correctly, it is important that you have your blood pressure checked regularly as there are not often visible symptoms.

Most of the time, the first 2 to 4 days will see you taking 10 mg 4 times a day and then raising it to 25 mg 4 times a day for the rest of the week. From then on it will still be 4 doses a day but 50 mg a dosage, and in certain cases may lead to 300 mg a day being taken. Once the blood pressure is under control the dosage will reduce to the lowest level possible where there is still an improvement when taking it.

If a dose is missed it should only be taken if it is not close to the time for the next one. Under those circumstances, wait until it is time for the next one.

Side Effects

Side effects will require different levels of treatment, but if hives appear, it should be flagged as an emergency as should breathing difficulties.

Less serious, but still needing medical treatment will be:

  • Chest pains
  • Pressure that moves along the jaw and shoulder
  • A feeling of faintness mixed with a pounding heart
  • Problems when you urinate and little urine when you do go
  • Swelling of the joints or numbness in the joints
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite

Precautions

If you have used Apresoline beforehand and had an adverse reaction you should ensure that your doctor knows.

Other issues the health care provider should know about will be:

  • Coronary heart disease
  • A problem with the mitral valve
  • History of kidney disease
  • Angina
  • Chest pains
  • Stoke or stroke like symptoms
