Myfortic is an immunosuppressant that weakens your body’s natural immune response in people getting a kidney transplant. This helps to prevent the body from rejecting the new organ. Often, Myfortic is given together with cyclosporine and a steroid medication.

The common side effects of Myfortic includes: indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, low blood cell counts, insomnia, and pain after surgery.

The more serious side effects may include:

• Bloody or tarry stools, coughing up blood, vomit that looks like coffee grounds
• Confusion, thinking problems, loss of interest in life
• Fever, swollen glands, painful mouth sores, cold or flu symptoms, headache, ear pain
• Low blood cell counts
• New skin lesions or moles that change color
• Pain or burning urination
• Signs of allergic reaction
• Stomach pain with vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss
• Swelling, warmth, redness, or oozing skin around wound
• Tenderness around transplanted kidney
• Weakness on one side of the body and loss of muscle control

You should not take Myfortic if you are allergic to Mycophenolic Acid or mycophenolate mofetil. Before you start taking Myfortic, talk to your doctor about your medical history and about all the medications you currently take including OTC and herbal medications.

Taking Myfortic while pregnant can cause miscarriage or birth defects in the first trimester of pregnancy. However, it is sometimes given to pregnant women who are unable to use other needed transplant medicines. You should not breastfeed while on this medication.

Precautions

Be sure to take Myfortic exactly as your doctor describes for you. Follow all instructions that come with your medication.

While using Myfortic, you must remain under the care of a doctor. Take the medication on an empty stomach, at least 1-2 hours before or after a meal. Swallow the whole tablet and do not crush, break, chew, or powder it.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the bottle closed tightly when not in use.

Myfortic can cause your body to produce too many white blood cells. This could lead to various cancers, severe brain infection, or a viral infection that leads to transplant failure. Call your doctor immediately if you notice: a fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, painful urination, easy bruising, mouth sores, skin lesions or sores that are red and oozing, change in mental state, weakness on one side of the body, tenderness near transplanted kidney.

There can be interactions between Myfortic and other medications. These include: azathioprine, cholestyramine, or antiviral medications. Talk to your doctor before you use other medications while on Myfortic.

To ensure this medication is right for you, be sure to tell your doctor if any of the following conditions apply to you:

• A rare, inherited enzyme deficiency, such as Lesch-Nyhan syndrome or Kelley-Seegmiller syndrome
• A vital, bacterial, or fungal infection
• Digestion problems
• Hepatitis B or C
• Stomach ulcer

1. Are my birth control pills still effective if I’m on Myfortic?
Answer: This medication can make hormonal birth control methods, such as pills, injections, implants, skin patches, or vaginal rings less effective. Use a back-up barrier method to avoid pregnancy. You do not need additional birth control if you use an IUD, have had a tubal ligation, or if your partner has had a vasectomy.

2. I have had hepatis. Can I still take Myfortic?
Answer: If you’ve ever had hepatitis B or C, Myfortic can cause the virus to become active or worsen. You will likely need to have frequent liver function tests while on this medication, and for months after you stop to be sure this does not happen.

3. What should I avoid while on Myfortic?
Answer Avoid taking antacids with this medication. You will also want to avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Do not take “live” vaccines while on this drug.
