What is Avandia used for?

Avandia is also marketed as Rosiglitazone. It is a prescription medication for those diagnosed with diabetes. Avandia controls the glucose levels in your blood. It is used to treat only those who have diabetes Type 2; those who have diabetes type 1 cannot use it.

You should not use this medication with insulin as it can bring about serious heart issues, so speak with your doctor about any heart problems because they may prescribe a more suitable medication for you.

Dosage

If you have type 2 diabetes, your Avandia dosage would be 4 mg once per day. You can divide  the oral tablet in two doses, and once your body gets used to the medication you can, increase it to 8 mg per day. The maximum dose you can take per day is 8 mg.

You can choose to take the tablet with or without food but report any signs of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) to the doctor. If your blood sugar is low, you may feel dizzy, nauseous , hungry, irritable, sweaty, feel dizzy and get headaches.

It is important to note that diet and exercise can also your body control blood sugar. These lifestyle measures should also be followed while taking this medication.

Side Effects

If you notice symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, tiredness, lightheadedness, stomachache, jaundice, cold feet or hands, and vision changes, talk to the doctor at once. Other side effects are mild and more common. These are symptoms of a cold infection like sinus pain, a stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throat.

A headache is also a common side effect when taking Avandia. Weight gain can also occur while on this medicine.

Precautions

  • You have severe or uncontrolled congestive heart failure
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis
  • Rosiglitazone allergy
  • Bladder cancer or bladder issues as Avandia can increase your odds of developing cancer of the bladder

  • Liver disease
