Usage

Abilify Maintena (Aripiprazole) is used for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults. It is also used to treat adults who suffer from bipolar disorder. Abilify Maintena is the first and only approved once-monthly injectable for both schizophrenia and maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults. Along with the first injection, patients should take oral aripiprazole or current oral antipsychotic for 14 consecutive days. Abilify Maintena belongs to a group of medicines called atypical antipsychotic drugs which affects the chemicals that allow communication between nerve cells (neurotransmitters). Illnesses that affect the brain may be due to certain chemicals in the brain being out of balance which may cause some of the symptoms you may be experiencing. Abilify Maintena seems to adjust the balance of chemicals called dopamine and serotonin. Although Abilify Maintena cannot cure the illness, it can improve the symptoms and keep them under control, reducing the risk of relapse as you continue treatment. This medication is not approved for the treatment of patients with dementia-related psychosis.

Side Effects

The common side effects may include insomnia, changes in weight, feeling of restlessness, headache, anxiety, the common cold, pain at the injection site, drowsiness, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, an urge to gamble, to spend money, to eat or other urges (development of a new or increased urge), hypersexuality (uncontrollable and /or inappropriate sexual behaviour of severity that causes distress), shaking (tremors), abnormal movements, dizziness, increased fat levels in your blood, hiccups, problems with speech, excessive sweating, hair loss, increased liver enzyme levels in your blood, inflammation of the liver, loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions, sleep apnea (a sleep disorder where your breathing is interrupted during sleep), sleep walking and eating while asleep. The serious side effects may include:

• Allergic reaction;
• Constipation;
• Skin rash

Warnings and Interactions

Do not use Abilify Maintena if you are allergic to aripiprazole or any of the ingredients in Abilify Maintena.

Before you use Abilify Maintena talk to your doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you:

• Are less than 18 years old or older than 65 years of age;
• Are pregnant or are breastfeeding;
• Are an elderly patient suffering from loss of memory and other mental abilities;
• Drink alcoholic beverages, or have ever abused drugs;
• Have never taken Abilify (aripiprazole) tablets before;
• Have diabetes, obesity, had or are going to have any surgery;
• Have or had blackouts or seizures;
• Have a history of any heart problems or suffer from high blood pressure;
• Have ever had a stroke or "mini" stroke;
• Have risk factors for developing blood clots such as: a family history of blood clots;
• Have or had low white blood cell count;
• Have involuntary, irregular muscle movements;
• Have a history of gambling or impulse-control disorders (urge to spend money, eat or other urges);
• Have a history of or are at risk of sleep apnea;
• Take oral contraceptives

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy or blur your vision. Avoid alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) as it can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness or clear vision until you can do it safely. This medication may make you sweat less, making you more likely to get heat stroke. Avoid doing things that may cause you to overheat, such as hard work or exercise in hot weather. Get medical help right away if you have a fever that does not go away, mental/mood changes, headache, or dizziness. Older adults may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially seizures, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, confusion, tardive dyskinesia, swallowing problems, and other serious (rarely fatal) side effects.

Tell your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist about all the medicines you take, including drugs prescribed by other doctors, vitamins, minerals, natural supplements, or alternative medicines. Medicines that may interact with Abilify Maintena: ketoconazole (antifungal), quinidine (antiarrhythmic), paroxetine (antidepressant) or fluoxetine (antidepressant), carbamazepine, drugs used to lower blood pressure.
