Usage

Salofalk (Mesalamine/5-aminosalicylic acid) is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, inflammatory conditions such as proctitis and proctosigmoiditis. The active ingredient in Salofalk is Mesalamine and 5-aminosalicylic acid. They belong to a class of drugs called aminosalicylates. The exact mechanism of action by which mesalamine protects the mucosa in chronic inflammatory bowel disease is not yet fully known. However, it is believed to inhibit the production of certain natural chemicals that may cause pain and swelling thereby speeding up the healing process in the affected colon.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Salofalk are stomach-ache, numbness, headache, diarrhea, and muscle ache.

Stop using Salofalk and contact your doctor right away if you have any of the serious side effects such as:
• High temperature that is not relieved with medication;
• Recurrent sore throat;
• Severe nosebleeds;
• Unexplained bleeding per anum

Warnings and Interactions

Before using Salofalk, tell your doctor if you are allergic to it, or to other aminosalicylates such as balsalazide, olsalazine, or to salicylates (such as aspirin, salsalate); or sulfasalazine; or if you have any other allergies. Salofalk comes as a tablet, and it should be taken orally with a cup of water. Swallow the tablet whole, do not break, or cut it. Follow your prescription label carefully and take your tablet as directed usually once daily. Do not miss any doses. Keep using this medicine for the full time of treatment, even if you begin to feel better after a few days. Contact your doctor if there is no significant improvement in your condition or your condition worsens.

Before you start using Salofalk, inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have:
• A rare blood condition called porphyria;
• Inflammatory conditions around the heart such as pericarditis;
• Kidney disease;
• Liver disease;
• Pancreatitis;
• Respiratory diseases including asthma or glaucoma

Tell your doctor about all the medications you use, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbal products, and vitamin supplements. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. Salofalk can harm the unborn baby. You should be on an approved contraceptive while taking Salofalk to avoid getting pregnant. Inform your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Salofalk passes into your breast milk. Salofalk is effective and safe for use in children above eight years of age. There may be a drug interaction between Salofalk and other drugs such as warfarin, tamarind, and azathioprine.
