Description

Generic Name: eletriptan hydrobromide

Drug Class: serotonin 5 HT-receptor agonist

Indications

Relpax (eletriptan) is an oral prescription drug used for the acute treatment of migraine, with or without aura. It relieves symptoms, such as headache, pain, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound. This is not indicated for cluster headaches or as prophylactic therapy for migraine.

Relpax Dosage

This is available in Relpax 40 mg and 20 mg tablets.

Relpax Mechanism of Action

This antimigraine agent is thought to work by hindering the 5-HT receptors on intracranial blood vessels and the sensory nerves of the trigeminal system. This results in the constriction of cranial vessels and pro-inflammatory neuropeptide-release inhibition.

How to Take Relpax

Before starting to take this medication, it is necessary to read the information leaflet or medication guide given by a healthcare professional. You must not take any medication unless you have understood the uses and directions. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for further medical advice or additional details.

This tablet is only meant to be taken by mouth. This is best taken at the first sign of migraine. It can be consumed with or without food. If your headache is not completely relieved or if it comes back, you may take another dose after 2 hours. However, you should remember that there is a limit to the Relpax dosing that you can take in 24 hours.

Make a dosing schedule. Do not increase or decrease your dosage. You should also not take this oral drug more frequently or longer than advised because it can lead to medication overuse headaches.

Warnings and Precautions

Do not take Relpax if you have a known allergy to eletriptan or any inactive ingredients the tablet may contain. Always be watchful for any signs of serious allergic reactions, including trouble breathing, swelling of the face and neck, severe dizziness, swollen lymph nodes, hives/itchiness, and skin rashes. If this occurs, stop taking this oral medication and seek emergency medical help immediately.

This medication may be contraindicated for people with a history of transient ischemic attack or “mini-stroke”, stroke, seizure, heart problems, liver disease, and blood circulation problems. Also, due to possible drug interactions, you should discuss all the prescription medications, nonprescription medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking.

This oral medication can increase the risk of heart problems. Tell your doctor if you are a smoker, overweight, postmenopausal, have diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol. You may be asked to undergo a heart exam before starting this therapy.

Dizziness and drowsiness are among the common adverse effects of this medication. People taking Relpax for migraine must practice safety caution when doing tasks that need alertness. You should also restrict your alcohol intake as alcohol can worsen your side effects.

Pregnant moms must take this oral drug only if extremely necessary. It is necessary to talk about all the possible risks with a healthcare provider. For breastfeeding moms, it is best to avoid this product as it is known to pass into the breastmilk.
