Usage

Paxil CR (Paroxetine HCL) is used to treat depression, panic attacks, anxiety disorders, social phobia, and a severe form of premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant. This medication works by helping to restore the balance of serotonin in the brain. Paxil CR may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level and may help restore your interest in living a normal life. This medication may also decrease fear, anxiety, unwanted thoughts, and the number of panic attacks. It may also lessen premenstrual symptoms such as irritability, depression and increase in appetite. Paxil CR should be taken at the same time every day with or without food. It may take between four to six weeks before you feel the full benefits of the medication.

Side Effects and Precautions

The common side effects of Paxil CR may include constipation, decreased sex drive or difficulty having an orgasm, diarrhea, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, infection, loss of appetite, sleep problems, sweating or anxiety, vision changes, and weakness. Seek immediate medical attention if you have symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Call your doctor right away if you have any of the following serious side effects:

• Bipolar disorder, drug addiction or suicidal thoughts;
• Heart disease or high blood pressure, or a stroke;
• Liver or kidney disease;
• Low levels of sodium in your blood;
• Narrow-angle glaucoma;
• Seizures or epilepsy

Do not use an MAO inhibitor within 14 days before or 14 days after you take Paroxetine as there can be a dangerous drug interaction. After you stop taking Paxil CR, you must wait at least 14 days before you start taking an MAO inhibitor. Avoid driving or any hazardous activity until you know how this medication affects you. Do not drink alcohol because it can cause side effects. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take including prescription, OTC, herbal products, and vitamins. There may be a drug interaction between Paroxetine and other medications such as diuretics, HIV or AIDS medications, narcotic pain medications, seizure medications, migraine medications, and medicines to treat anxiety, mental illness or mood disorders. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant. Do not breast-feed while using this medication. Paxil CR is not approved for use by anyone younger than 18 years old.
