CORLANOR (IVABRADINE) INDICATIONS

Corlanor is an oral prescription used in individuals with chronic heart failure caused by the lower portion of the heart that is not contracting well. Its generic name is ivabradine.

Corlanor helps reduce the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure in adult patients with stable, symptomatic chronic heart failure with decreased left ventricular ejection fraction. In addition, this prescription is typically used to treat stable, symptomatic heart failure due to an enlarged heart (also known as dilated cardiomyopathy or DCM) in young individuals ages six months and older.

Individuals who have chronic heart failure cannot get enough oxygen-rich blood to the rest of their body, which causes the heart to pump faster, thereby putting more strain on it.

When Corlanor is taken correctly and absorbed into the bloodstream, it works by regulating the heart rate. Also, it slows down diastolic depolarization. As a result, it lowers the heart rate, causing less strain on the heart.

CORLANOR (IVABRADINE) USES AND DOSAGE

Corlanor is approved to use in adult patients who have chronic heart failure with symptoms to reduce the risk of hospitalization for worsening heart failure.

In addition, children (six months of age and older) with stable heart failure and DCM-related symptoms are treated with Corlanor oral medication.

It belongs to a class of medications known as hyperpolarization-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated channel blockers.

Patients require varying amounts of Corlanor depending on their needs. Usually, the frequency and dose of this oral prescription are based on the severity of their health condition, other medical problems, age, and tolerance to the treatment.

When using Corlanor, make sure to read all medication information and follow all the directions carefully. If you are uncertain about how to use this oral prescription, talk to your doctor or pharmacist for clarification.

The following are the Corlanor recommended dosages:

  • For adult and pediatric patients greater than 40 kg:

The initial dose is 2.5 or 5 mg two times a day with meals. After two weeks of medication, the intake can be adjusted based on heart rate, not exceeding the maximum of 7.5 mg twice daily.

  • For pediatric patients with less than 40 kg:

The recommended starting dose is 0.05 mg/kg twice daily with meals. Based on the client’s heart rate, adjust the dosage every two weeks by 0.05 mg/kg. Maximum intake is 0.2 mg/kg (patients six months to less than one year) or 0.3 mg/kg (patients one year and older), up to a total of 7.5 mg twice daily.

The following are the directions for administering Ivabradine:

  • Administer Corlanor oral medication two times a day or as prescribed by your doctor
  • Take Corlanor in the morning or evening with food
  • If you have a hard time swallowing the tablet whole, inform your doctor.
