What is Advair HFA used for?

Advair HFA Inhaler is used to prevent or control symptoms of breathing problems such as shortness of breath and wheezing due to asthma.

Advair HFA contains two medications such as salmeterol and fluticasone. This medication belongs to a drug class called corticosteroids. This medication works by lessening the irritation and swelling of your airways.

How to use Advair HFA

You must shake the inhaler for 5 seconds before you use it. Inhale it orally as your doctor or healthcare provider has directed you. You will usually have to take this medication two times a day in the morning and the evening, 12 hours between each dose.

Advair HFA Dosage

Advair HFA doses come in an aerosol for inhalation, and three-dose strengths are available in the market, such as Advair HFA 45/21 mcg per actuation, Advair HFA 115/21 mcg per actuation, and Advair HFA 230/21 mcg per actuation. Those are equivalent to what we have available:  50/25 mcg, 125/25 mcg, and 250/25 mcg.

Caution

Before you use Advair HFA, tell your doctor or healthcare provider if you are allergic to both medications contained in this drug, such as fluticasone or salmeterol. Advair HFA can cause allergic reactions due to it having inactive ingredients. This medication should be used as your doctor has instructed you to carefully follow your doctor’s instructions.

Before using Advair HFA, you must inform your doctor about various medical histories. These medical histories include high blood pressure, bone loss, current or past infections such as herpes or tuberculosis, heart diseases such as irregular heartbeat, heart attack, chest pains, diabetes, eye problems such as glaucoma or cataracts, overactive thyroid, liver disease, and seizures.

The drug salmeterol in this medication may also cause QT prolongation, which is a condition that affects the heart rhythm. QT prolongation in rare cases can cause a possibly fatal fast and irregular heartbeat, other symptoms such as fainting, and severe dizziness. If this occurs, seek medical assistance right away. Before surgery, prescription or non-prescription medication and herbal products should be told to your doctor. Older adult patients with COPD may have a higher chance of pneumonia and a higher sensitivity to specific side effects of this medication, such as QT prolongation.

Advair HFA can also interfere with a child’s growth and can slow it down; however, if left untreated, asthma can also cause a child to grow slower. It is still unknown if Advair HFA passes on to breastmilk; talk to your doctor before you consider breastfeeding. Advair HFA should only be taken by pregnant women if needed.

Advair HFA Side Effects

Throat irritation, hoarseness, stomach upset, or headaches may occur. If these effects continue or get any worse, contact your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Take note that your doctor has examined you and has seen you fit to be taking this medication. For further instructions, speak with your doctor.

Serious Side Effects

White patches in the mouth and tongue, mental or mood changes such as nervousness, signs of infections such as fever and sore throat that persists, vision problems such as blurred vision, trouble sleeping, muscle cramps, increased thirst and urination, and tremors. If you happen to experience any of these effects, contact your doctor immediately.
