What is Nimotop?

Nimotop (Nimodipine) is a prescription medication that helps prevent brain damage due to reduced blood flow to the brain caused by a ruptured blood vessel in the brain (aneurysm). Geriatric patients may have more side effects from this medication, especially drowsiness, dizziness, and inflammation in the ankles or feet. Drowsiness and dizziness put the patient at an increased risk of falling. 

This medication must only be administered at extreme necessity during pregnancy. Talking to your doctor or pharmacist is advised to discuss the risks and benefits of taking this medication while pregnant.

Nimotop Side Effects

Nimotop Dose

Nimotop comes in one dosage form, which is a tablet, and one dosage strength, which is 30 mg.  

For the treatment of subarachnoid hemorrhage, the recommended dose is 60 mg, taken orally every 4 hours for 21 days. Administer this medication within 96 hours of subarachnoid hemorrhage.  

For patients with hepatic impairment, reduce the dose to Nimotop 30 mg, taken orally every 4 hours.  

If you missed a dose of this medication, take Nimotop as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose for your condition, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one. 

If you are experiencing fainting or trouble breathing which are possible symptoms of an overdose, call the local emergency hotline and seek medical attention immediately.
