Diane 35 (Ethinyl estradiol/cyproterone) is a prescription medication used to treat several types of acne in women whose antibiotics and other treatments were unsuccessful. It also treats moderate to severe acne related to androgen sensitivity or hirsutism in women of reproductive age. A high level of androgens or hypersensitivity of the sebaceous glands to a normal level of androgens causes increased sebum production and acne. The active ingredients in Diane 35 are cyproterone and ethinyl estradiol. Cyproterone belongs to a group of medications called antiandrogens. It works by blocking the effects of androgens by binding to proteins called androgen receptors. Ethinyl estradiol belongs to a group of drugs called estrogens. It works by regulating the hormones that affect the skin.
