What is Glucotrol?

Glucotrol (generic name: glipizide) is an oral medication indicated to enhance glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This is given along with proper diet and exercise. By controlling high blood glucose levels, complications like nerve problems, loss of limbs, blindness, kidney damage, stroke, and heart attack could be prevented. However, Glucotrol is not indicated for type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis.

This is available in Glucotrol 5 mg tablet.

How does Glucotrol work?

This sulfonylurea works by stimulating the release of insulin in the pancreas. This substance binds to the sulfonylurea receptors on the beta-cell plasma membrane in the pancreas, which results in the closure of the adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-sensitive potassium channel, then stimulates the release of insulin.

How to use Glucotrol

To start, read the medication information leaflet that comes with this prescription product. Do not take any diabetes medication if you have not fully understood the drug information and precautions in the guide provided. If you need additional medical advice or have inquiries about this drug, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this tablet orally. This is usually prescribed once daily and should be taken 30 minutes prior to breakfast or your first meal of the day. Swallow the pill whole and immediately follow with a glass of water. It is not recommended to chew, crush, or cut this extended-release tablet.

Remember to take this drug regularly and exactly as prescribed to achieve the best results. To avoid skipping doses, create a dosage regimen. If you are prescribed colesevelam, take it not less than 4 hours after taking this glipizide. This is because colesevelam may decrease the absorption of Glucotrol.

Do not alter your dosing as it is based on your medical condition, response to treatment, and other drugs you are taking. Further, do not stop taking Glucotrol abruptly to avoid worsening conditions.

Precautions when using Glucotrol

Before starting to use this antidiabetic agent, you should disclose your complete medical history to your physician. This includes any history of thyroid disease, hormonal conditions, kidney disease, liver disease, and electrolyte imbalance. Some diseases or disorders may directly impact how your body will respond to the medication. Also, you should discuss all prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, herbal medicines, and supplements you are taking because of possible drug interactions with this diabetes medication.

Keep an eye out for any allergic reactions while on this treatment. Avoid taking this extended-release tablet if you have a known allergy to glipizide or any inactive ingredients it may contain. Do not drink alcohol or limit your alcohol intake while taking this medication. Alcohol may cause hypoglycemia and can also worsen adverse effects like drowsiness and dizziness. You should also practice safety caution when doing activities that require clear vision and alertness, such as operating machinery and driving.

This oral drug may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid indoor tanning and limit your sun exposure. When going outside, you should also wear protective clothing and use sunblock cream.
