What is Isopto Carpine?

Isopto Carpine, with the generic name pilocarpine hydrochloride, is an ophthalmic solution indicated to reduce elevated IOP or intraocular pressure among people with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma. It is also used to manage acute angle-closure glaucoma, prevent postoperative elevated intraocular pressure secondary to laser surgery, and induce miosis.

This is available in Isopto Carpine 4% (40 mg/mL), 2% (20 mg/mL), and 1% (10 mg/mL).

How does Isopto Carpine work?

This muscarinic cholinergic agonist works by directly stimulating the muscarinic receptors and smooth muscle, including the iris and secretory glands. It also contracts the ciliary muscle, which results in increased tension on the scleral spur and opening of the trabecular meshwork spaces in order to facilitate the outflow of the aqueous humor. These actions reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) and induce miosis by contracting the iris sphincter muscle.

How to use Isopto Carpine

To initiate, read the Isopto Carpine guide or information leaflet that comes with this product. Do not use any eye medication if you have not yet fully understood the drug information and instructions in the manual provided. If you need additional medical advice or have inquiries regarding the correct use of this medication, you may ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Remember to use this ophthalmic solution exactly as prescribed. If necessary, make a dosing schedule to avoid missing your doses. You may also be prescribed other eye medications, note that there should be a 5-minute interval in between. Administer eye drops prior to eye ointments to allow proper absorption.

Do not alter your Isopto Carpine dosage, frequency, or length of treatment as your medical condition and the response to therapy determine how long the process will take. Be sure not to stop taking the medication to avoid worsening conditions or rebound effects.

With the dropper directly above your eye, squeeze the bottle to release a drop into the affected eye.

Let go of the lower eyelid and slowly close your eye.
